Popis:

Organised by the British Czech and Slovak Association at the Czech Embassy in London.

Born on 9 January 1890, and famous in the English-speaking world in the interwar period, Karel Čapek was more or less forgotten in the West after World War Two. Was it because the voice of this most loveable of writers was too gentle, with little to say to a world that had suffered Nazism, the Holocaust and the Cold War?

Dr Čulík will discuss selected works from Čapek’s vast literary legacy, and argue that his understanding of social problems, international politics and the human predicament may be more relevant to today’s world than some recent commentators tend to think.

Jan Čulík is Senior Lecturer in Czech Studies at the University of Glasgow. He has written extensively on contemporary Czech literature, media, politics and society, and is editor of the online journal Britské listy.

Refreshments will be served following the talk
