SDKU: Dual Citizenship Act No Reason to Summon Slovak Parliament

Bratislava, May 19 (TASR) - If the amendment to the Dual Citizenship Act is passed by the Hungarian Parliament, it will come into effect as of January 2011, so it's time to start negotiations, said SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova at a press conference in Bratislava on Wednesday.
"We want to find a solution that would suit both sides. There's no need to frighten people and summon security councils," said Radicova, alluding to the Security Council session summoned by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Tuesday.
According to her, the party doesn't see any reason to summon an extraordinary session of the Slovak Parliament either, "...mainly because the Act is just in the process of being passed and there is still time for politicians to do what they are supposed to do - discuss it's final version," she said, adding that if the discussions were to fail, this issue should be left to the new parliament resulting from June parliamentary elections.
"There is still a chance that the Hungarian Parliament will pass a law that will be in accord with the bilateral agreement between Slovakia and Hungary. If this isn't the case, SDKU has means and ways to resolve this, and it will not be by punishing people," she said. Radicova thinks that SDKU, Slovakia's ethnic-Hungarian SMK party and Hungarian party Fidesz could come to an agreement at round-table discussions, clearing up problematic issues that cause tensions in relations.
According to Radicova, the head of the European People's Party (EPP) Wilfried Martens has shown willingness to take up the role of a mediator in these discussions. "I can communicate the basic statement that bilateral agreements have to be preserved," she stated.
