Head of German Bundestag Lammert Opens Exhibition in Bratislava

Bratislava, May 19 (TASR) - Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska and his German counterpart Norbert Lammert on Tuesday evening opened a multimedia exhibition in Bratislava Castle named "The Wall Is Gone - The Velvet Revolution and the Overcoming of Separation", which presented the long and hard process of Germany's unification.

Photographs and over 100 short films show historic moments such as the fall of Berlin wall, the dismantling of the famous Checkpoint Charlie border crossing, meetings between politicians and the atmosphere on the streets of Berlin.

According to Lammert, the fall of the Berlin wall was a great symbol, because the removal of Germany's separation heralded the reversal of the separation of Europe. "The fall of the wall wasn't the beginning, but a continuation of a long-term process that culminated in revolutionary changes," said Lammert.

"People in the East needed impulses like salt," said Paska, pointing to the symbolism of this legacy at a time of turbulence in the EU and the eurozone. According to Paska, Europeans should be prepared not only to take advantage of benefits, but also to contribute towards finding solutions to problems.
