Ondava River Water Safely Away from Trebisov, No Need to Evacuate

Trebisov, May 18 (TASR) – Evacuation of people living in Trebisov (Kosice region) due to flooding won't be necessary as water flowing through the gap in a dam on the Ondava River (only a few kilometres from the town) is not moving toward the town, it was reported on Tuesday evening.
A breach in the dam, caused by heavy rains and rising water levels, has grown to around 30 metres wide by Tuesday noon. But the situation was reported to be stabilising later in the afternoon.
Interior Minister Robert Kalinak came to the flood-hit area at night and took part in a session of the crisis-management team on Tuesday morning. He gave assurances that portable walls measuring around 1 km have already been brought in, and added that the authorities were at the time also considering evacuating Novy Majer - a district of Trebisov.
In the morning, Kalinak also said that thanks to all-night work carried out by around 140 soldiers from near-by Michalovce, local people and the fire brigade, the water wasn't threatening Trebisov directly.
