Kosice, May 18 (TASR) - Charging university students who exceed the standard number of years that studies should last or enrol at a second university is in accordance with the Slovak Constitution, the Constitutional Court headed by Chairman Ivetta Macejkova ruled on Tuesday.
The complaint that led to the case was filed two years ago by 38 MPs, whose representative Tatiana Rosova (SDKU-DS) complained mainly against the principle of retroactivity introduced by the Act on Universities. According to her, students had no way of knowing that they'd need to pay for their studies when they applied.
In its verdict, the Court saw no reason to view the charging of university fees as unconstitutional, as the only students affected by the new legislation are those who exceed the regular duration of study. Those who want to study full-time at one university for free can still do so.
"Changes in the law mustn't be politically motivated, populist or with a special purpose," said Macejkova, indicating that none of these reasons were involved in this particular case.
