EETS Should Solve Incompatibility of EU's Toll Systems

Bratislava, May 17 (TASR) - The incompatibility of road-toll systems in EU countries remains a problem, participants agreed at the roundtable discussion on Slovakia's road-toll system and its readiness for inter-operability organised by the Transport Research Institute (VUD) in Bratislava on Monday.

The situation should be solved by a European Electronic Toll Service (EETS), which should enable the use of one On-Board Unit (OBU) per contract and one invoice for all EU-member states.

"Nowadays it is not sustainable to use so many OBUs - not only from the practical point of view, but also in terms of traffic security. Inter-operability would clearly make our lives easier, as it would mean having just one OBU and one contract for each vehicle," said hauliers association (CESMAD) general secretary Pavol Reich.

Full inter-operability calls for agreements between individual member states and a change of legislative. According to Lubomir Palcak from VUD, the solving of this issue is of key importance for EU countries. He explained the system using mobile phone operators as an example. "Technically, you can call any operator in the EU with roaming. In reality, this depends on with whom your operator has closed contracts," he said.
