Bratislava, May 17 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is harshly criticising Hungary's plans to adopt an amendment on dual citizenship, once voted for a proposal similar to the Hungarian one in Parliament, according to ethnic-Hungarian SMK party.
The said vote, concerning an amendment to the Act on Slovak Citizenship, took place in Slovak Parliament in May 2005, SMK chairman Eva Dunajska told TASR on Monday, adding that the amendment back then was designed to allow Slovaks living abroad to gain Slovak citizenship in a fast-tracked procedure, and this was passed by all 138 lawmakers present in the House, including Fico.
"The Slovak law formulates the requirements to qualify for fast-tracked procedure in an even more lenient way than the Hungarian proposal does," said Dunajska. According to SMK, those who want to claim their citizenship affiliation to Slovakia are not even required to have a command of the Slovak language. "It's enough if two other Slovaks living abroad confirm that the applicant – a foreign citizen - is interested in Slovak culture. That's when he or she becomes eligible for being granted Slovak citizenship (as a second citizenship)," explained Dunajska.
