Smer and HZDS Youth Groups Slam Slovak Right and Hungarian Bill

Bratislava, May 17 (TASR) - The youth organisations of coalition parties Smer-SD and LS-HZDS on Monday declared that they will do everything possible to help their respective parties remain in government after the June 12 election.

According to chairman of Smer's Young Social Democrats (MSD) Andrej Kolesik, young people in Slovakia can choose between two alternatives. "There is the alternative of rightist individualism, which did nothing for young people for eight years (between 1998-2006), and then there is the alternative of parties of the current governing Coalition, which have introduced many things to support young families," said Kolesik, appealing for young people to vote.

The youth organisations also condemned the amendment to the Dual Citizenship Act that is set to be discussed in the Hungarian Parliament. "We think that approving this Act without consultations with Slovakia will cause serious problems, and will pointlessly increase tension between the two countries. We're convinced that both countries want to have good neighbourly relations, so we don't understand the initiative," said Kolesik.

Chair of the Democratic Forum of Youth (affiliated with HZDS) Jozef Bozik added that if the Act comes into force, Hungary's state symbols will enter Slovakia as part of everyday life. "We aren't living in the 19th century," he said.
