Csaky: Fico Causes Pointless Hysteria Over Dual Citizenship Law

Budapest, May 14 (TASR) - Opposition ethnic-Hungarian SMK chairman Pal Csaky is confused at what Slovak Premier Robert Fico really wants as to the dual citizenship for foreign Hungarians which lawmakers in Hungary are considering enacting, said Csaky after the Slovak Cabinet condemned Hungarian Parliament's plans to that effect on Friday.

"This game of Premier Fico reminds me of a small child playing in the sand and crying because of having been deprived of something and calling for remedy... As long as I know there hasn't been such bill even tabled in the Hungarian parliament, so the whole hysteria is pointless," said Csaky after attending the first session of the new Hungarian parliament.

At its extraordinary meeting Friday morning the Slovak Cabinet adopted a resolution condemning the Hungarian parliament plans to adopt an amendment to the law on dual citizenship without consulting it with Slovakia. According to the resolution, such amendment has extraterritorial effects and may pose a security risk for Slovakia. Prime Minister Fico therefore intends to convene Slovakia's Security Council and tasked ministers of foreign affairs, the interior, defence and justice to quickly produce an analysis into security risks arising from the legislative measure in question.

"Today I read Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak's position saying that the new Hungarian law will in fact offer nothing to Hungarians living abroad. If the law is to offer no huge benefits, I believe that all of this is ridiculous. It is surely so because Mr. Fico wants to divert attention from his problems in the run-up to the elections, wants to take exploit it for election campaign, I deem it puerile," said Csaky.

He confirmed that later on Friday he is slated to meet with politicians of the soon-to-be ruling Fidesz and President Laszlo Solyom.
