Fico: Energy Production Using Renewable Sources Should Go Up By 20%

Martin, May 13 (TASR) - Slovakia has made serious commitments vis-a-vis the EU when it comes to renewable energy sources, Slovak Premier Robert Fico said at the Martinska Teplarenska (MT) heating company headquarters on Thursday.

Fico took part in the ceremonial operational launch of the new fluid 60 MW boiler, designed to incinerate biomass. The purpose, according to Fico, is to increase energy production by 20 percent in the upcoming years using biomass as a fuel. A state-owned MT represents a great example of how Slovakia should proceed in the future. Fico conveyed hope that similar projects, based on international co-operation, will be implemented also in the other five state-owned heating companies, even though "this will be interesting for the private sector as well".

Premier Fico emphasised that not only will MT employ about 250 people, but it will also create additional jobs in the incinerating biomass, because "someone needs to plant those trees, cut them and then work with the wood, transforming it into a useable form". Fico considers this type of energy production to be the way forward of Slovakia, as it minimalises the adverse effects energy production has on the environment. Also, the fact that the €16-million investment hasn't raised the heating charges in Martin is a bid plus, he added.
