EU Commission to Decide on EIB Loan for D1 Motorway Next Week

Bratislava, May 12 (TASR) - Slovakia said on Wednesday that it will have secured all the finances needed to build the D1 motorway before May 18, by which time the European Commission has agreed to have the European Investment Bank (EIB) lend one-quarter of the €4 billion bill if the country has resolved specified environmental issues.

"The European Commission and the European Investment Bank made a loan conditional on the settling of our environmental issues. We're shortly supposed to work out the way in which we'll deal with environmental problems under a new EU guideline that was adopted by Slovakia after it had issued building permits," said Vazny after the government's weekly policy meeting.

According to him, the Transport Ministry is set to meet the EU Commission next week to smooth out disagreements. If it sees eye-to-eye with the ministry, the EU executive body will tell the EIB to bankroll its portion of the bill. The remaining finances are to be borrowed from the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
