SDKU: June Election Will Be Referendum on Slovakia's Future Direction

Bratislava, May 13 (TASR) - The parliamentary elections in June will also be a referendum on Slovakia's future direction, said opposition SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova on Thursday in connection with the failed attempt to summon an extraordinary parliamentary session on the Greek rescue package.

According to Radicova, there are two alternatives for Slovakia - either to continue the irresponsible behaviour of the current Government, or to take the responsible approach, which the Opposition wants to promote. She said that the election will at the same time be a referendum on whether Slovakia will choose the path of loans and covering losses by banks, with the poor chipping in for the wealthy, the responsible for the irresponsible; or whether it will choose the path of responsible politics, reforms and mainly of sovereign decision-making by the country.

Radicova said that the Opposition wanted to discuss the alternative approaches at the extraordinary parliamentary session, but this didn't take place due to repeated absences by MPs.

Coalition parties Smer-SD and LS-HZDS boycotted the session, describing the Opposition's initiative as populist and demagogic.

"Smer-SD and Premier Robert Fico reject a dialogue and chose attacks instead ... the Opposition didn't spoil the parliamentary session," pointed out Radicova, adding that the Opposition won't initiate another session related to Greece. "The people will have the opportunity to express their opinion on the Government's decision to lend money to irresponsible countries and put the people of this country in debt," she added.
