Foreign Affairs Committee to Meet to Discuss Dual Citizenship Bill

Bratislava, May 13 (TASR) - The parliamentary committee for foreign affairs said on Thursday that it will discuss a contentious bill on dual citizenship that the Hungarian Parliament plans to begin debating on Friday morning, at the request of its member Pavol Hrusovsky (Christian Democrats/KDH).

Hrusovsky asked committee chairman Juraj Horvath (Smer-SD) earlier in the day to call an immediate meeting of the committee with Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak and Ambassador to Hungary Peter Weiss in attendance in order to clarify the situation regarding the adoption process of the dual-citizenship bill.

"I agree with the urgency of this issue and understand Hrusovsky perfectly for reacting instantly to what the premier (Robert Fico) said at a press conference earlier on Thursday. This is a sensitive, serious issue that could have very serious ramifications even with respect to our Constitution. I will call a committee meeting after the Hungarians start debating the bill," said Horvath, according to whom Lajcak is on an official trip to Turkey.

Horvath believes that in order to thrash out this issue thoroughly it would be useful to obtain information from the Hungarian legislature.

Hungarians living in Slovakia, increasingly vocal of late about what they see as deterioration in their minority rights, are the single largest minority group in the country, making up around 10 percent of the total population of 5.4 million.
