Fico: We'll View Hungarian Dual Citizenship Law as Security Threat

Bratislava, May 13 (TASR) - Slovakia will consider the adoption of an amendment on dual citizenship by the Hungarian Parliament as a security threat that will immediately be submitted to the OCSE High Commissioner for Minorities for assessment, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at a press conference on Thursday morning.

According to Fico, if the Hungarian Parliament passes the amendment at its constituent session on Friday, this will be an unilateral step at odds with international law. "According to us, the adoption of the amendment, if it takes place, will violate the principle of friendly neighbouring relationships," he said.

At the same time, Fico condemned the "arrogant" way in which the legislation was announced to Slovakia, and rejects its adoption without any consultation with the Slovak side. He views the motion as arrogant, egoistic and a dangerous move by Hungary's FIDESZ party. According to him, it could considerably affect the atmosphere in the run-up to Slovakia's general election on June 12 and could damage Slovak-Hungarian relations.
