Bratislava, May 12 (TASR) - It's in the interest of Hungary's FIDESZ party to see ethnic-Hungarian parties in the surrounding countries post good results in elections, Hungary's incoming foreign minister Janos Martonyi said after meeting Slovakia's ethnic-Hungarian SMK party chairman Pal Csaky in Bratislava on Wednesday.
Martonyi pledged that FIDESZ will provide all necessary help to SMK ahead of Slovakia's June 12 general election, but without interfering in what will be happening on the Slovak political scene.
"The future Hungarian Government won't determine the political organisation of political parties representing minorities beyond its borders, but our task is to support them in their endeavours," said Martonyi.
Asked whether soon-to-be Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is planning to meet Slovak Premier Robert Fico before the Slovak election on June 12, Martonyi replied that he can't say right now. That's because the new Hungarian Government hasn't been sworn in yet, he clarified.
Martonyi said, however, that he and Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak concurred that Orban and his Slovak opposite number – whoever that may be – should meet up as soon as possible after the Slovak election.
At the meeting, Csaky has received an invitation to attend the first session of Hungary's Parliament on Friday following the country's general election last month. A date for a bilateral FIDESZ-SMK get-together should be specified at the session, with the meeting expected to take place before the end of May.
[There is a second party, headed by former SMK leader Bela Bugar, running in the election with Hungarian roots called Most-Hid. However, it is billing itself as an amalgam of Hungarian and Slovak politicians. It wasn't mentioned as being in line for assistance by Martonyi - ed. note].
