Government Okays Slovak Embassy in Montenegro

Bratislava, May 12 (TASR) - According to a decision made by the Government at its session on Wednesday, Slovakia will have an embassy in Podgorica in Montenegro as of June.

Montenegro also plans to open its own embassy in Bratislava in 2010.

The Slovak office premises in Montenegro should be rented with start-up expenditures of €86,500 and an annual operating cost of €197,400. Apart from an ambassador and one diplomat, the embassy should also employ an administrative worker and a driver, reads the material okayed by the Government.

Slovakia is the only Central European country without a representative office in Montenegro at the moment. According to the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry, Slovak diplomacy in the name of the European Union played a significant role in the process of the creation of this sovereign state. "Thanks to Slovak diplomacy, the political conditions needed for the successful, democratic and legitimate organisation of a referendum on the future statute of the country were created, meeting European standards, reads the ministry's report.

The ministry claims that this was a significant success for Slovak diplomacy in its activities in the Western Balkans, while several EU high-ranking officials have stated that it was first clear success for European policy in the region.

Slovakia recognised Montenegro as a free and sovereign state on June 13, 2006. Slovakia established diplomatic ties with it on the day on which the country was accepted into the United Nations - June 28, 2006.
