Jahnatek: We Want to Tidy Up System of Levies After General Election

Bratislava, May 11 (TASR) - Foreign investors are most interested in state support for investments and reducing corruption in the state and judiciary, said Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek (Smer-SD) on Tuesday after holding a session with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham).

Changes in the tax system aren't the most important issue right now, said Jahnatek, at the same time conceding possible changes in the system of levies. "No special attention was paid to taxes. Prime Minister (Robert Fico) gave assurances that taxes wouldn't be raised. We'd prefer to concentrate on the levy issue, which we'd like to tidy up," he said, concerning Smer's post-election goals.

According to Jahnatek, the first thing that should be carried out in this respect is to complete the UNITAS project, i.e. uniting the collection of taxes and levies. "When UNITAS sees the light of day, we'll see what tax- and fees-collection enforcement is like and then we'll be able to say how various fees and levies we will redistributed, so that in the end, what belongs to the state coffers will get there," said Jahnatek.

AmCham president Robert Simoncic said after the session that the discussion between the Chamber and the Finance and Economy Ministries has intensified when it comes to the conditions for foreign investors. "The model is moving forward quite a lot. What we've launched is working very well," he said.

According to him, investors are focused mostly on Slovakia's labour force having the correct structure. This is why AmCham also engages in the sphere of education. "We view it as crucial that when investors come, the ground should be prepared for them," he added.
