Pociatek: Joining Guarantee Package Best Solution Available

Bratislava, May 11 (TASR) - The Slovak Government joined the Europe-wide guarantee mechanism because all the relevant institutions agreed that it is the best way out given the palette of choices, said Slovak Finance Minister Jan Pociatek (Smer-SD) in reaction to opposition SDKU-DS criticism concerning the Government joining the EU's guarantee package of more than €700 billion.
According to Pociatek, current measures taken by the Government were taken in order not to block the whole mechanism. He explained that the actual involvement of Slovakia in loans and guarantees have to be okayed by the Slovak Parliament - however, not the current one, but the one resulting from elections planned for June 12.
Pociatek thinks that the extraordinary session initiated by the Opposition doesn't make sense, as the situation is not calm enough for a normal discussion that would clear up important issues. At the same time, he thinks Slovakia should wait to see whether Greece will indeed adhere to the austerity plans, which will be known after the elections.
On Wednesday (May 12), the Slovak Parliament is due to hold an extraordinary session initiated by the Opposition. SDKU thinks that this session is important because the Government has promised to help the affected countries financially by taking part in the guarantee package. "How could the Government do this? These contracts have to be okayed by Parliament," said Radicova.
