SDKU: Fico Backs EU Fund Because Slovakia Could Well Need It

Bratislava, May 11 (TASR) - Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has steered Slovakia onto the same path followed by EU countries that are currently facing economic problems, said opposition SDKU-DS election leader Iveta Radicova at a press conference in Bratislava on Tuesday.

"(Fico) supports loans for loans, because we're threatened by the same situation," she stated.

SDKU doesn't agree with the steps taken by the European Union, which has opted for a guarantee package of more than €700 billion. This fund should be used if one of the EU members has problems. "The responsible poorer ones are chipping in for the irresponsible wealthy ones," said Radicova, adding that the EU should adopt measures that would make countries accountable.

On Wednesday, May 12, the Slovak Parliament is due to hold an extraordinary session initiated by the Opposition. SDKU thinks that this session is important because the Government has promised to help the affected countries financially by taking part in the guarantee package. "How could the Government do this, these contracts have to be okayed by Parliament," said Radicova.

The opposition party wants to call on the Government to submit the documents passed at the extraordinary meeting of leaders of eurozone-member countries in Brussels on Friday. At the same time, it wants to see an analysis of the possible impact of the guarantee on the state budget. Thirdly, the Government should publish details of what it is doing to improve Slovakia's public finances.
