Fico: Ministry Merger Should Help Sooth Extremist Attitudes

Bratislava, May 10 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico believes that the merger of the agriculture and environment ministries as of July 1, 2010 will help to calm "extremist attitudes" in relations between the forestry sector and conservationists, TASR learnt on Monday.
"I'm deeply against extremes as far as this relationship goes, be it on the part of wood processors or conservationists. Extremes don't help anybody," said Fico at an international Finnish-Slovak seminar entitled 'Forests - Our Common Wealth' in Bratislava.
According to Fico, the government that will be set up after the June 12 general election ought to undertake further measures aimed at stabilising state-run forestry company Lesy SR.
As we view forests as our greatest national wealth, quite understandably a great deal of attention has been paid to this issue in the drawing-up of a long-term strategy for Slovakia's long-term development, added the premier.
He added that the strategy, as drawn up by the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV), counts on an increasing ratio of forested areas vis-a-vis total land in Slovakia from the current 41 percent up to 50 percent.
