Parliament to Discuss Loan for Greece on Wednesday

Bratislava, May 10 (TASR) - The extraordinary session of Parliament at which Slovakia's contribution to the bailout plan for Greece is set be debated will take place on Wednesday (May 12) afternoon, parliamentary spokesman Jozef Plsko told TASR on Monday.

Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska (Smer-SD) summoned the session after receiving a petition from opposition lawmakers signed by 33 MPs. Wednesday is the last day on which the House can meet, so this is in line with legislation, said Plsko.

Besides the Opposition, the coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) also wanted a session on this hot topic. Its coalition partners LS-HZDS and Smer-SD said that a session shouldn't be summoned ahead of the June 12 election.

In addition, Smer leader and Premier Robert Fico finds it "completely useless" for the session to take place before the Greek Parliament legally upholds the decision of the Greek executive to scrap what the rest of the world views as unsubstantiated social benefits.

Fico has already stated that the Slovak Government won't get involved in negotiations concerning the provision of bilateral financial aid to Greece without the necessary cuts on the Greek side being made first.

The Greek Parliament is expected to discuss the tough legislative proposals only in July.
