Meciar: No Agreement, So We Abstained from Voting on Media Complex

Bratislava, December 4 (TASR) - There was no prior agreement between LS-HZDS and the other two Coalition parties on building the media complex on state land, so the party's MPs abstained from voting on it in Parliament, LS-HZDS leader Vladimir Meciar said on Friday.
His comments came in reaction to Parliament's rejection earlier in the day of Dusan Jarjabek's (Smer, formerly LS-HZDS) legislative proposal.
"So far there is no political agreement on the media centre, and as long there is none, it's premature ... therefore HZDS was against it and abstained from voting," said Meciar.
The proposal called for state-owned Slovak Radio (SRo) and Slovak Television (STV) to be able to build a joint complex on state-owned land. The other two Coalition parties Smer and SNS voted in favour of the proposal, while the Opposition was against.
Jarjabek said that HZDS voting has surprised him, as there were no signals from the party in this respect.
Jarjabek said the proposal was necessary to complement other regulations for the construction of the media complex. The concept looked ahead to the construction of a joint media centre on state-owned land under the management of the Culture Ministry, said Jarjabek.
