Parliament Declines to Raise Lifetime Salary for Former Presidents

Bratislava, December 4 (TASR) - The Slovak Parliament has decided on Friday that the lifetime salaries for former Slovak presidents received after they leave office won't be increased in the future.

Parliament has declined the Constitutional Officials' Salaries Act amendment proposal drafted by independent MP Frantisek Miklosko (elected KDH but now KDS/Conservative Democrats of Slovakia), who proposed that the Slovak President should be entitled to a lifetime salary amounting to that of an MP.

Currently, former presidents receive a lifetime salary of €995.82 a month. Miklosko claims, however, that the head of state represents part of state protocol even after his term expires, for he represents the continuity of Slovakia and the Presidential Office and also acts in a way that elevates society in a variety of ways. "That's why he needs an appropriate financial provision for his role," emphasised Miklosko.

An MP's salary was three-times that of an average nominal monthly wage in 2008, which works out to more than €2,000 per month. According to Miklosko's proposal, the former presidents should have also been entitled to monthly financial compensation from the President's Office to cover their costs vis-a-vis their public activities.
