Gasparovic Holds Discussion with Serbian Parliamentary Chair

Belgrade, December 4 (TASR) - Serbian Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Dukic Dejanovic has conveyed her delight at Friday's meeting with visiting Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic over the fact that the Slovak minority in Serbia is also represented in the Executive Council of Vojvodina.

Dukic Dejanovic has also called on ethnic-Slovak representatives to increase their interest in Council representation.

Gasparovic also paid a visit to the Vojvodinan capital Novi Sad, where he met with Executive Council Chairman Bojan Pajtic and Slovak Lutheran bishop Samuel Vrbovsky, who said that nearly 50,000 Slovak Lutherans live in Vojvodina. He added that all religion communities in Serbia co-operate at different levels, particularly in the teaching of religion at schools.

"Our church is connected with the nation - the church is where Slovaks are," he said, adding that ethnic Slovaks has maintained their identity due to the church. According to Vrbovsky, relations between Serbian Orthodox church and ethnic-Slovak Lutherans are fairly cordial. A Slovak delegation took part in recent funeral ceremony of Serbian Patriarch Paul.
