Novi Sad, December 4 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic on Friday expressed thanks to the Serbian Government for its care for the community of ethnic Slovaks living in Serbia's autonomous province of Vojvodina.
"I also want to praise the (local) Slovaks that have maintained their relation to their mother country and the culture of their parents. And I also want to thank them for feeling like proud and responsible Serbians," said Gasparovic.
"This is the identity of Serbian Slovaks - the art of Slovaks, as Serbians, to present both cultures - Serbian and Slovak," said the Slovak president, who visited his compatriots accompanied by Serbia's President Boris Tadic and Vojvodina's Executive Council chairman Bojan Pajtic.
Tadic told his Slovak counterpart that the Serbian Government will fully support the Slovak minority in his country.
More than 60,000 ethnic Slovaks live in Vojvodina, which represents the largest compact community of ethnic Slovaks in the world outside of Slovakia. The Slovaks – most of them Protestants – emigrated to this fertile area in the 18th century after the Turks had been driven out.
