Meciar Hopes to Again Join Fico in Forming New Slovak Government

Bratislava, May 7 (TASR) - Of the political parties running in the June 12 general election, co-ruling LS-HZDS is the only suitable one for both the country and Smer-SD party, which opinion polls show should emerge as the winner and form the new Government, LS-HZDS Chairman Vladimir Meciar told TASR in an interview Friday.

Assessing the prospects of some of the best-placed of the 18 political parties running to make the 5-percent threshold and get into Parliament, Meciar said that SDKU-DS finds itself in crisis in terms of credibility and its programme. "Some things were said, and there is silence ... whereas the whole truth has yet to be told," he said.

According to Meciar, Christian Democrats (KDH) are headed by the lackadaisical Jan Figel and may expect help from churches more than from their own activities. Meciar at the same time thinks that KDH does not amount to a whole lot in terms of its programme, or otherwise. "Figel is a big negative surprise. As he was lackadaisical in Brussels, he is at home too," he said.

As for ethnic Hungarian SMK, the situation is problematic because of the situation in Budapest, so their participation in Government could be problematic. "Their people are beholden to what's going on (resurgence of the right) in Hungary. And ... you can't tell whether they will remain (in the Government) or not," he said.

SaS is another candidate for Government that is only starting to feel its oats. "In order to get votes it resorts to extremism, drugs, homosexuality ... for which the Slovak mindset is not up and ready."

SNS is not so much nationalist as it is anti-Hungarian – in crude style, says Meciar, who had SNS in the coalition of his last two Governments (1992-94 and 1994-98).
