Lizak: Austrian Concerns About Mochovce Unjustified, Talks Continue

Bratislava, May 7 (TASR) - At the meeting Friday with Walter Grahammer, general director of the European section of Austrian Foreign Ministry, Slovak Ambassador to Austria Peter Lizak pointed to the forthcoming and transparent manner in which Slovakia has proceeded vis-a-vis the construction of the 3rd and 4th nuclear reactors at Mochovce (Nitra region), TASR was told by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano later in the day.

The meeting was initiated by Austria in connection with the final statement of the environmental impact assessment for the planned 3rd and 4th blocks issued by the Slovak Environment Ministry on April 30, 2010.

"The discussion ... confirmed the readiness of both parties to go on with the current intense communication based on transparency and on complete mutual awareness."

Lizak pointed out that Slovakia has to date been doing its utmost to fulfil this objective, and it also plans to do so in the future. However, Slovakia considers the reservations presented by Austria as unjustified. The legitimate interests of Austria as well as Slovakia concerning the security of the nuclear power plant have been considered.

According to Lizak, throughout the process Slovakia has respected all regulations of the International EIA convention (signed in 1991 in the Finnish city of Espoo), and did not violate any mutual agreement with Austria.

The Slovak Ambassador also confirmed that expert bilateral meetings concerning the issue of the nuclear plant's security will go on in the future as well.
