Union of Roma: Vote-buying Among Roma Persists

Bratislava, May 6 (TASR) - The Union of Roma in Slovakia (URS) civil organisation has got hold of information showing that the 'buying' of Roma votes continues to be the case ahead of the June 12 general election, RUS chairman Frantisek Tanko told a press conference on Thursday.

"Representatives of individual unnamed political parties are going ahead with this, offering material and financial aid to Roma who will vote for their particular party," said Tanko.

RUS intends to provide all the pertinent information regarding the matter to the public in late May. The six parties that are engaged in the practice include ones that are currently represented in Parliament.

According to Tanko, vote-buying has taken place in the districts of Rimavska Sobota, Revuca, Tisovec (all Banska Bystrica region), Poprad (Presov region) and Cierna nad Tisou (Kosice region), in which Roma were offered €8 each in return for casting their votes in favour of a specific party.
