Secovce, May 5 (TASR) - Data from the spring prognoses of the European Commission show that the Slovak economy might be the fastest growing economy in the EU in 2010, Slovak Finance Minister Jan Pociatek said after Wednesday's Government session in the town of Secovce (Kosice region).
"All the parameters, which the EC is expecting, are in accordance with our own expectations," said Pociatek, adding that currently a mood of optimism is beginning to settle in.
He said that the latest data from the Labour Ministry (not published yet) show that the unemployment rate has stabilised and in April the rate registered a drop. "The same is predicted for May. The greatest news is that we're coming out of the crisis," said Pociatek.
According to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, no other Slovak Government has faced bigger challenges than his. "We had an unprecedented gas crisis, we had immense technical responsibilities linked to the introduction of euro (January 2009)... and, most important of all, no Slovak Government has faced the hardship of a global economic crisis," said Fico.
He claimed at the end of the election term, he is placing Slovakia as a successful country within the EU. "The average deficit in the EU in 2010 is estimated at 7.2 percent. We have planned deficit of 5.5 percent, maybe 6 percent, but our deficit will be smaller than the EU average," stated Fico.
