Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - LS-HZDS chairman Vladimir Meciar and Stefan Jagercik, who represents people cheated out of their savings by non-banking financial institutions that went bust in 2002, signed an agreement on mutual support on Tuesday.
"Even though no compensation has been approved under the current Government, we have pledged to promote at least partial compensation for the former clients of non-banking companies," said Meciar.
"We'll do everything possible to ensure that the victims of non-banking companies mainly vote for HZDS in the upcoming parliamentary elections on June 12," said Jagercik, adding that HZDS has always voted in favour of relevant legislation. "We've also received legal counsel from Professor (Katarina) Tothova (a HZDS MP)," added Jagercik. According to him, the victims of non-banking companies should rally behind HZDS in the election for their own sakes. More than 200,000 people lost money, a number that along with family members represents a considerable voter base.
"The case of the non-banking institutions turned out to be the scam of the century," said Meciar, according to whom the stolen Sk14 billion (€464.7 million) couldn't have vanished into thin air. Meciar thinks that the money is still lodged in the bank accounts of various companies, which, under the right "political and legal" pressure, might be persuaded to return some to the original owners. "If they give Sk1.4 billion (€46.4 million) out of that Sk14 billion back to people, it will be enough (for those people). However, this needs to happen now, as such a thing won't be possible to achieve in the distant future," said Meciar.
Meciar denied having a good relationship with jailed businessman Jozef Majsky. "There has never been any connection whatsoever between the two of us," claimed Meciar, adding that Majsky organised a number of campaigns against him in the past. Meciar also confirmed that he is in possession of a disk containing the names of the non-banking institutions' clients, including those who made a considerable profit from the transactions. "The only reason why I won't publish these names is that I don't want to be prosecuted for publishing personal information," he claimed.
