Fico to Talk to Social Partners and Banks Before Leaving for EU Summit

Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - Before Prime Minister Robert Fico leaves for the upcoming extraordinary EU summit in Brussels, summoned primarily to seek solutions to Greece's financial troubles, he wants to meet his Government's social partners (the Unions and employers' organisations), as well as representatives of Slovakia's banking sector and the Slovak Central Bank in order to discuss the details of his mandate at the Brussels meeting, TASR learnt on Tuesday.

The session of the aforementioned social partners is set to take place on Friday, May 7, said the Government Office's communications department director Brano Ondrus.

"The premier will propose that the Slovak Government make no decisions regarding a loan to be provided to Greece - until the Greek Parliament passes swift measures aimed at removing the above-standard social welfare benefits that the country can't afford based on its economic performance," said Ondrus.

As the Greek Parliament is expected to pass a thorny legislation package only in July, relevant Slovak laws allowing a loan for Greece can only be subject to the newly-formed Slovak Parliament, after the June 12 general election, said Ondrus, adding that Fico has already told Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic of his plans.

Gasparovic is reported to have agreed to attend Friday's meeting between Fico and the social partners.
