Janis: Fico's Meeting With Social Partners Is Bypassing of Parliament

Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - An extraordinary meeting between Slovak Premier Robert Fico, the social partners (the Unions and employers' organisations), representatives of Slovakia's banking sector and the Slovak Central Bank, set for Friday (May 7) is "the unacceptable bypassing of Parliament", said SDKU-DS parliamentary caucus chairman Stanislav Janis on Tuesday.

"So those greedy banks, as Fico called them, deeply involved in Greece's financial problems, will decide whether or not Slovak taxpayers should cover the financial losses suffered when running their businesses in Greece?" asked Janis, adding that the final say regarding Slovakia's financial aid to Greece is up to Parliament and not the participants in the extraordinary meeting, whose blessing Fico intends to seek.

Janis also pointed out that "the premier is now going to ask for (social partner's) approval, although his Finance Minister Jan Pociatek already gave consent to the financial aid on Sunday (May 2) and without Fico's assent". That Pociatek voted for the aid is proven by the document "sitting on the table" at the Parliamentary Committee for European Affairs, says Janis.

According to director of Government Office Press Department Brano Ondrus, the extraordinary meeting will be convened to discuss the details of Fico's mandate at the upcoming EU Summit in Brussels, summoned to seek solutions to Greece's financial troubles.

"The premier will propose that the Slovak Government make no decisions regarding a loan to be provided to Greece - until the Greek Parliament passes swift measures aimed at removing the above-standard social welfare benefits that the country can't afford based on its economic performance," said Ondrus.
