SDKU: Fico Shouldn't Help Greece Without Parliament's Approval

Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - Opposition party SDKU-DS on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Robert Fico not to accept commitments to Greece until they are debated by the Slovak Parliament.

"We're calling on the prime minister not to accept any commitments. Parliament reserves the right to discuss and approve Slovakia's statement on the proposal for financial assistance for Greece. This stems from a constitutional law for which the prime minister himself voted," said SDKU election leader Iveta Radicova at a press conference in Bratislava.

"Making up for the irresponsible behaviour of governments, the failures of European Union institutions and inappropriate running into debt and preserving above-standard living standards is a complete denial of the Slovak way," stressed Radicova, adding that EU control mechanisms and institutions also failed.

SDKU vice-chair Ivan Miklos warned that Slovakia may get into similar trouble as Greece. Neither Greece nor Slovakia used their "good times" to reduce the state deficit, he added.

Miklos also pointed out that even though Fico criticised 13th and 14th (two extra) pensions in Greece, he's promising something similar. "It's absurd that Robert Fico claims that Greece has to scrap its 13th and 14th pensions when he's promising them on pre-election billboards alongside Labour Minister Viera Tomanova," said Miklos.

According to him, Fico is lying about Slovakia's financial situation, just like Greek representatives did. "It's alarming that the state-budget deficit grew four times faster in the first four months of this year than (it did) in the crisis year of 2009," said Miklos.
