Labour Ministry Still Waiting for EC's Social Enterprises Assessment

Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - After almost seven weeks of waiting, the Slovak Labour Ministry has still not received the official Slovak version of the results of a European Commission inspection into the country's so-called social enterprises.

"We haven't received it yet," said ministry spokesman Michal Stuska. The ministry received the draft in the English language on March 19. The two-month period granted to the ministry in which it should deal with problems found by the EC begins from the delivery of the Slovak version. "As it hasn't been submitted yet, we can't set a date for the reply," said Stuska.

The EC has criticised the high level of unpermitted state assistance provided to the social enterprises - amounting to 95 percent of the start-up expenses, while as much as 90 percent was supposed to be financed by EU funds. As a result, Brussels decided not to reimburse the money spent.

The European Commission sent the first results of its December audit of the social enterprises to the Labour Ministry in March. The audit included a probe into how effectively Eurofunds are being drawn vis-a-vis a number of projects under the Employment and Social Inclusion Operational Programme, which includes the social enterprises.
