Bratislava, May 4 (TASR) - Representatives of Slovakia's ethnic-Hungarian SMK party should meet leader of Hungarian party Fidesz and top candidate for the post of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban towards the end of May, SMK chair Pal Csaky told TASR on Tuesday.
"It will probably be the last week of May. An exact day hasn't been set yet, however," said Csaky.
Csaky stated that Orban has invited his party to a SMK-Fidesz meeting. The topics discussed should be future co-operation as well as SMK's opinions on the activities of the Hungarian Government. "We'd like to talk about the topics of further discussions," he said, adding that he thinks that Fidesz will meet ethnic-minority parties from other states, such as Romania, Serbia and Ukraine.
"We'll certainly talk about how we see the opportunities and problems of him governing," said Csaky, noting that SMK has been pointing to the need to speak about the problems in Slovak-Hungarian relations. "There is a chance to start a new era of relations with the new Slovak government. It will all depend on its composition, as well as on whether there will be the political will in Bratislava," said Csaky.
At the same time, SMK plans to propose that Orban should discuss his law on the fast-tracked granting of Hungarian citizenship with neighbouring countries first. Csaky said that he wants to avoid further tensions, which could be misused by certain politicians. He added that Hungarian citizenship will not be granted on a mass scale, but based on individual applications. "As far as I know, it's all about speeding up the whole procedure," he added.
