Fico on May Day: It's Work that Slovakia Currently Needs The Most

Liptovsky Mikulas, May 1 (TASR) - May Day is primarily a holiday of work, and it is work that Slovakia currently needs the most, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said at May Day celebrations in front of the Cierny Orol (Black Eagle) historical building in Liptovsky Mikulas (Zilina region).
"I want to thank all working people, regardless of their profession, and also all those that want to work but can't, as the global economic crisis is still taking jobs away from us. Last but not least, I want to express my thanks to those that have their work done, and it's their merit that Slovakia today looks like it looks," said Fico.
"May Day is now built on the principle of sincere relation, not obligation. Who want, they commemorate it, who don't want, they don't; but it's a public holiday and not some politicians' invention," said Fico. He pointed to the fact that Cierny Orol was in 1918 the venue for a May Day rally of Slovak workers, who decided to stand up for their social and national rights.
The event in the centre of Liptovsky Mikulas was also devoted to celebrations of the 6th anniversary of Slovakia's entry to the European Union. "Slovakia is being viewed as a trustworthy country and a stable partner. Our membership in the EU has been a success story; we're part of the Schengen zone, we successfully managed to introduce euro ... The EU membership represents a great contribution to Slovakia, therefore I don't wonder that such a large portion of Slovakia's citizens endorse the European idea," said the premier.
