SDKU: Cabinet Has 18 Days to Secure Cheaper Motorway Construction

Bratislava, April 30 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico's Government has 18 days to secure cheaper and more efficient motorway construction, opposition SDKU-DS party vice-chairman Ivan Miklos told a press conference on Friday.

Miklos was speaking following an announcement made earlier in the day by Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny, who said that the deadline for completing financial issues concerning the construction of selected stretches of the D1 motorway via public-private partnership (PPP) projects has been extended by 18 days.

"We're urging the Government to halt the overpricing and protraction while there is still time," said former finance minister Miklos, stressing that road construction is not at the forefront of the Cabinet's policies.

According to Miklos, the whole venture is overpriced by €1.3 billion, and deadlines for construction companies have been extended by 11-14 months. "This is going to be overpriced further and deadlines put back further," he said.

"SDKU advocates speedier and cheaper motorway construction," he said, stressing that the party doesn't oppose public-private partnership (PPP) projects as such, as long as they're not overpriced and motorway construction delayed.
