Ministry: 2,000 Slovak Football Fans to Go to World Cup in South Africa

Bratislava, April 30 (TASR) - Around 2,000 Slovak fans are thought to be planning to support the national football team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, head of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry's communications department Anna Jurikova told a press conference on Friday.

The ministry began preparations vis-a-vis the attendance of Slovak fans at the event well in advance, she said. "At the start of the year, we launched a webpage within the ministry's website that provides information on the conditions for entering and staying in the country, security, climate conditions, accommodation options, match venues, options for getting hold of tickets, etc." she said.

The ministry has issued a list of recommendations for football fans aimed at avoiding possible difficulties and providing advice on what to do if in trouble.

Those who intend to spend more than 30 days in the country will need a visa, which can be applied for at the South African embassy in Vienna, she noted.

Four Slovak police officers will be present at Slovakia's matches and will co-operate with local police officers in order to help maintain order and safety at the matches, she added.

The Slovak national football team is scheduled to play New Zealand in Rustenburg on June 15, followed by a match against Paraguay in Mangaung/Bloemfontein on June 20. Slovakia's final group-stage match will be against Italy in Johannesburg on June 24.
