Number of Unemployed Increases by 16 Percent In Last 9 Months

Bratislava, December 3 (TASR) - The number of unemployed Slovaks increased throughout the first three quarters of 2009 by 16 percent, the Statistics Office reported on Thursday.
This figure represents 307,400 unemployed people on the labour market. The year-on-year rise in unemployment grew from 0.2 percent in 1Q09 to 38.9 percent in 3Q09, and the unemployment rate increased in July-September y-o-y by 3.5 percentage points to 12.5 percent - the highest level since 3Q06.
Most unemployed Slovaks had lower education; according to the Stats Office, persons with vocational, primary school and high school education made up 80.6 percent of the unemployed.
The number of those out of jobs for the duration of six months to one year more than doubled by 31,100 people, as well as those unemployed for three to six months (by 21,100 people) and for one to three months (by 18,700 people). The number of unemployed persons for one month increased by 9,700.
