Bratislava, December 3 (TASR) - Slovakia will at the coming UN climate summit in Copenhagen support reduction of emissions by 30 percent by 2020 compared with their 1990 levels, Environment Minister Jozef Medved said at a press conference in Bratislava on Thursday.
Medved said that the country will bind itself to this commitment if the developed and third world countries will make similar commitments.
Slovakia originally promoted a 20-percent reduction, also preferred by Germany, but Medved said that EU environment ministers in November agreed that they will support the 30-percent target. He also said that Slovakia will insists on transferring the AAU emission quota to the post-Kyoto Protocol period.
The delegation of Slovakia on the December Copenhagen summit will be led by the Prime Minister Robert Fico. It is expected that an agreement will be reached that will replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2013.
The conference is to take place between December 7-18, and the highest-level ministerial meetings will be held during the last two days.
