Trust in Economy Went Continued to Rise in April in Most Areas

Bratislava, April 29 (TASR) - Confidence in the Slovak economy, which began to rise in June 2009, continued its upwards trend in April 2010, with the Index of Economic Sentiment (IES) increasing by 1.3 percentage points month-on-month to reach 90.3 points, the Slovak Statistics Office announced on Thursday.

The developments were mainly influenced by a rise in confidence both in retail and the construction industry, as well as among customers. Conversely, confidence fell in industry and services.

In total, the IES went up by 21.5 percentage points year-on-year, but is still 8.1 percentage points below the long-term average.

The confidence indicator in the construction industry rose by 1.5 percentage points month-on-month in April to minus 41.5 points, which was 19.5 points lower than the long-term average. Developments in this area came in the wake of a moderate rise in demand for production in the sector, coupled with an expected rise in employment over the next three months.

The retail sector indicator went up by 7 points, but was still below the long-term average. Spurred on by foreseen developments in the economy and employment, the indicator of consumer confidence, for its part, increased to minus 16.3 points, up by 1.5 points on a monthly basis. At the same time, it was up 27.6 points year-on-year.

The trend was reversed when it came to confidence in industry, which fell by 4.4 points month-on-month to minus 0.7 points following two months of increases.

Confidence in services dropped by 1.7 points to 16.3 points following several months of increases.
