Slovaks to Co-Operate With ESA on Research into Peaceful Use of Space

Bratislava, April 28 (TASR) - Slovakia will co-operate with the European Space Agency (ESA) in research into the peaceful use of space based on an Agreement on Mutual Co-operation signed between the Slovak Government and ESA in Bratislava on Wednesday. "Membership develops in three phases, we are currently entering the first five-year stage with the status of an observer. All documents issued by ESA will now be made available to us," according to Slovakia's signatory Slovak Vice-premier Education Minister Jan Mikolaj.

He added that in terms of finances the first stage won't cost Slovakia anything. During this phase, Slovakia will find out how much of an interest there is among research organisations and private companies to participate in activities related with space research and technologies. Furthermore, Slovakia will be granted an observer status at the ministry level on the ESA Council.

According to Mikolaj, Slovak experts will now be able to take part in mutual information exchanges as well as in ESA training courses. The co-operation will also feature the exchange of researchers, granting of scholarships and joint promotion as well as the support of education activities.

At the contract signing ceremony, ESA was represented by Peter Hulsro, Director for Legal Affairs and International Relations.
