Bratislava to Host Int'l Conference on Post-Communist Transformation

Bratislava, April 28 (TASR) - An international conference devoted to the presentation of views concerning the transformation processes that have been afoot in Central and Eastern Europe over the past 20 years will be held in Bratislava on Thursday and Friday, the office of Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Dusan Caplovic told TASR on Wednesday.

The two-day event entitled 'Two Decades After' is organised by Bratislava's branch of the Germany-based Friedrich Ebert Foundation in conjunction with the civic association Proforum.

The first day will feature discussions on the economic and social dimensions of transformation, and day 2 the building of democracy and the rule of law.

The conference will feature speeches by numerous renowned personalities, including current Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and former Slovak Finance Minister (1998-2002) Brigita Schmognerova, as well as her successor at the ministry Frantisek Hajnovic.

Former Austrian Ambassador to Slovakia Gabriele Matzner-Holzer and well-known expert in German-Czech relations Eugenie Treutzschler von Falkenstein, inter alia, will also deliver addresses.

Speeches devoted to the role of culture, education, media and the church will be delivered by, for instance, Hungarian writer Gyorgy Konrad and former Slovak culture minister Rudolf Chmel.
