Parliament Overrides President's Veto on Universities Act Amendment

Bratislava, April 27 (TASR) - University professor guarantors will be able to 'guarantee' a particular field of study until the age of 70 rather than 65 as is currently the case, as Parliament on Tuesday okayed an amendment to the Universities Act for a second time and overrode President Ivan Gasparovic's veto, TASR learnt on the same day.

The initiative was backed by a total of 77 legislators (76 were necessary to override the veto).

According to governing Smer-SD party MP Mojmir Mamojka, who drafted the bill, Slovakia is short of professor guarantors, a fact that hampers universities from gaining accreditation and hence prevents some students from achieving their academic degrees.

The bill was approved in Parliament earlier this year, but Gasparovic rejected to sign it. He claims that raising the upper retirement limit for professors is merely a short-term solution and isn't the way to deal with the accreditation problem. suggesting new blood in academe is called for here.
