KDH Calls for Government to Delay Decision on PPP Projects

Bratislava, April 26 (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) on Monday called for the Government to postpone the final decision on the first package of PPP projects for motorway construction until after the general election (on June 12).

"The reason is circumstances attesting to a lack of both transparency and frugality," said KDH chief Jan Figel at a press conference, describing the tender as the biggest case of 'tunnelling' in Slovakia's history.

"According to experts, the first package has been overpriced by more than €1 billion. This means around €185 for every Slovak citizen," said Figel, who claimed that it will only be financial groups that will profit from the deal.

KDH vice-chairman for economic affairs Anton Marcincin said that Austria could serve as an example for Slovakia, as its motorway construction via PPP projects is 10-20 percent cheaper than the state alternative. "But if the (Slovak PPP projects) were 40-50 percent more expensive (than the state alternative), then we wouldn't be in favour of such PPPs," he added.

A recent analysis by economic weekly Trend claimed that the first package of motorway construction via PPP projects is overpriced by more than 40 percent.
