Slovakia's Development Aid Shrank in 2009 Due to Crisis

Bratislava, April 26 (TASR) - Slovakia provided €54 million, or 0.086 percent of its gross national income (GNI), in official development aid (ODA) in 2009, according to a document that was discussed by the Cabinet at its session on Monday.

In 2008, the aid amounted to €65.4 million, or 0.102 percent of GNI, meaning a year-on-year reduction of €11.4 million last year, or 18.6 percent, with the economic crisis blamed for this.

A total of 75 percent of ODA in 2009 was made up of multilateral aid, with bilateral aid accounting for the remainder.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry noted that Slovakia's ODA lags behind objectives set out by the European Council in June 2005. According to these goals, the EU's new member states ought to achieve an ODA/GNI ratio of 0.17 percent in 2010 and 0.33 percent in 2015.
