Fico: Two-Party Government Ideal Solution for Slovakia

Bratislava, April 24 (TASR) - Slovakia would benefit the most from having a government consisting of only two political parties, because such a configuration would guarantee a certain level of stability, Slovak Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) told TASR in an interview.

Fico thinks that a three-party coalition is quite problematic, as individual parties often need to withdraw their political aims and agree on compromises. "I'm aware that no political party in Slovakia will be able to form a government all by itself; however, it would be a great success if we managed to reduce the current number of political parties," said Fico.

He pointed out that the coalitions of four or five partners created a lot of turbulence and instability in Slovakia in the past. Specifically, he referred to the Mikulas Dzurinda's government between 2002 and 2006, the one comprising four parties mutually so incongruous that their MPs began to leave, which resulted in coalition break-up just before the end of the election term.

According to Fico, voters now have an easy choice to make. On one side, there's Smer-SD, the unifier of the centre-leftist wing, and there are splintered right-wing parties on the other.

"I'd like to see the (conservative) Christian Democrats (KDH) sitting at one table with (liberal) Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), discussing the issues like registered homosexual partnerships, abortions, or legalising marihuana. These things can only lead to an utter instability," said Fico.

He added that a two-party government wouldn't get into arguments so often, or wouldn't bother the public with its internal disputes.
