Vasaryova: Historic Writings Should be Renovated in Slovakia, Not Abroad

Bratislava, April 23 (TASR) – Historic writings printed on vinegar paper should be deacidified in Slovakia and not by the commercial German companies, SDKU-DS MP Magda Vasaryova said during her protest in front of the Culture Ministry on Friday.

"I asked Culture Minister Marek Madaric for a personal meeting on March 24 to discuss the issue. Unfortunately, Mr. Minister hasn't found time for so much as a reply to date," said Vasaryova. According to her, €120 million from the EU funds could be used to build a facility in Slovakia for deacidifying historic documents.

"Already in 2009, the Slovak National Library drew up the proposal of timetable for the construction of the Integrated Preservation Centre," said Vasaryova, adding that having such a centre built in Vrutky (Zilina region) would provide jobs for some 80 highly-qualified experts.

The Government recently passed a framework document, according to which the preservation centre will be built near Martin (Zilina region). According to information obtained by TASR, however, the construction works will take five-six years and the Eurofunds from the Information Society operational programme can't be used for the project in question, as the programme doesn't cover costs on construction works.
