SMK Wants Fundamental Slovak-Hungarian Treaty Reassessed

Bratislava, April 23 (TASR) - The parliamentary Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) is calling for a revision of the intergovernmental fundamental treaty of 1995 between Slovakia and Hungary, claiming that it no longer meets present-day requirements in certain ways.

"We want future governments of Slovakia and Hungary to reassess the treaty, as it must be upgraded in certain points," said SMK vice-chairman Jozsef Berenyi.

By the same token, SMK in its manifesto for the June 12 election is pushing for the closest possible co-operation between the two countries. "We're specifically interested in having a supplementary European Union borderland developmental programme and state development projects co-ordinated as much as possible," said Berenyi.

According to Berenyi, it is essential that a change takes place in the overall attitude towards the Hungarian minority, which certain politicians have attempted to turn into the enemy of the Slovak nation. "Over the past four years we've witnessed a situation in which it seems that this unhealthy notion has become part of government policy, which is a very dangerous path," he said.
