Patriot Act Also Given Thumbs Down at Constitutional Committee

Bratislava, April 22 (TASR) - After the Patriot Act, drafted by co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS), didn't receive backing from Parliamentary Culture and Media Committee earlier this week, the same scenario repeated itself at a Parliamentary Constitutional Committee session on Thursday.
As the bill was vetoed by the president (in March) it needed to be backed now by all present members of the committee, but Opposition SDKU-DS MP Peter Missik and chairman of the committee Mojmir Mamojka (Smer-SD) didn't vote for it.
Katarina Tothova (LS-HZDS) said that she voted for the bill, even though she thinks that it should have been called "Amendment to State Symbols Act". At the same time, she stressed that even if the Act enters into force as late as on September 1 (the original date was April 1), schools won't anyway manage to equip themselves with public address systems.
President Ivan Gasparovic vetoed the Act last month, saying that schools won't be able to furnish themselves with the necessary equipment (such as loudspeakers for playing the national anthem, and several state symbols) within such a short period of time.
The bill will now go before Parliament without the backing of the two committees.
